Cupping is an ancient technique of applying suction to the body to relieve pain and increase circulation. With many American athletes including gymnast Alex Naddour and swimmer Michael Phelps displaying the telltale dark red or brown spots on their bodies during the games, cupping is one of the biggest stories to come out of the Olympics this week. Media coverage of cupping has been widespread on many major news outlets covering this story. To help explain what cupping is and why Olympic athletes are using it, check out Olo Acupuncture's Co-founder and Clinical Director, Yuka Hagiwara, L.Ac. on New York's Channel 11 WPIX.
Cupping involves applying small glass or plastic cups to the skin with suction. The suction affects the superficial muscle layer, releasing stagnation and increasing circulation into the muscle tissue. Once the cups are applied, they can stay on from 5-15 minutes. Often a red or purple bruise can develop, which is a sign of improved circulation to the area.
Cupping is an effective technique for relieving acute muscle strains and pain, and chronic tension alike. Olo Acupuncture offers stand-alone treatments for both new and return patients for $50. If you would like to add cupping to an acupuncture treatment, it is just a $15 add-on.
For returning patients who have not been to Olo in over six months, during the month of August, we are waiving our re-engagement fee of $40. That mean you will pay the regular return patient rate of $65.
To schedule a cupping appointment please contact the clinic during business hours.
